Well, your cross hatching is very good.  You still kept subtleties in the values even with the dark cross hatching (like on his hind leg for example).  Personally, I think the cross hatching gives it a glorious look with a rich value range, but I didn't see it with just the diagonals either, ha!  Really awesome gallery you have as well.
